What will be the future of email?

I predict that we are not using email anymore to send & receive data over the internet.

Now we will have a solution to the ongoing problem of increasing spam & viruses. I would say the solution is in RSS.

Spam filters are not the final solution to spam, as it gets more complicated to seperate spam emails from regular mails. A spamfilter is not the solution to filter 100% of spam mail and keeping 100% of the right emails.

Therefore, I see the solution in a webbased environment like a weblog in which you can control who is reading your posts.

Writing your message
For example I have a weblog and create categories: All * Close friends * Business contacts * Family * Husband * children * And I could add subcategories.

If I write my message, I click on which categories can view my post. So, when I write an email about my holiday, I can choose the categories *Close friends* and *family*. But if I were to write a message to my husband, I would only allow my husband to view this post.

How to read a message meant for you
I use an RSS reader and click on all contacts that I have, I can add a contact by adding their weblog. So when I want to check my ‘email’. It will show me all messages from all contacts I want to see and I can start reading, and posting in my own weblog again.

The main difference is that messages are not to be sent anymore, but are ‘yours’ to show. You decide to whom you are showing your message. And you decide in whose messages you are interested to read.
